Low-profile earpiece with coiled cord                                                                                   EAR-2

Plugs into any standard 3.5 mm jack. Listen to your scanner without being obvious about it. You've probably seen earpieces like this being worn by police, FBI, SWAT, TV anchors, etc.  Clear earplug and coiled tube, a 24" long coiled cord (from the plug to the clip), extends to 48", and a heavy-duty clip to attach the cord to your collar or shirt.   You need one.

Low-profile earpiece with mike for ham and commercial 2-way radios                           EAR-3

GRE and Radio Shack scanner programming cable                                                                    PC-2

This is the cable that comes with the GRE radios, or that you buy separately from Radio Shack.  The computer end has a USB connector, and the radio end is a 3-conductor mini-plug. Programs virtually any GRE or Radio Shack software-programmable scanner made in the last 5 years.  Use with the appropriate programming software for your radio.  If you don't have the software, Starrsoft has excellent programming software, and Butel is also very popular.  There is a free trial period on both.

If you don't see your GRE or Radio Shack scanner listed on one of these sites, it is not really software programmable (such as the Radio Shack  PRO-94).

Small commercial 800 MHz antenna                                                                                                          ANT-1

This is a 4" high antenna for your scanner or 800 MHz 2-way.  Has a BNC connector (the bayonet-type connector used on Radio Shack and GRE scanners, and earlier Uniden scanners).  Will fit most scanners. On the Uniden BCD-396T or XT, you use the SMA to BNC adapter that comes with the radio.  Designed to work best on 800, not just fairly well on all bands like the stock antenna, and it still receives other bands, too.  It's shorter than the fat stock antenna, which helps keep it out of your ribs, and the lower part covers the antenna connector very nicely.

    SCANNER REPAIR

If you have a scanner which needs repair, there are two good options:

    • Contact the manufacturer and send it to them.  They have lots of experience making any repairs your radio may need, and the best possible access to any parts that may be needed.

Radio Shack:  800 843-7422 (they say take it to your local store, which will send it in)

    Uniden:  800 297-1023

    GRE:  650 591-1400

    • One company specializes in scanner repair:  G&G Communications.  Their rates are reasonable; $40 labor, plus parts and shipping. They've been in business since 1973.
Estimate fee is $20.00 which includes return shipping if you decide not to repair the scanner. Turnaround time is 2-3 weeks if parts are in stock. Phone 716 768-8151.
